Semester 2 results bans & exemption process..

Dear student,

I am writing to let you know that a ban on releasing results has been implemented.

This means that there may be some delays in getting your semester two results to you.

The results ban has been implemented because the University’s senior management has
ignored staff concerns over excessive workloads, job insecurity, high student-staff
ratios, insufficient teaching resources, and many other issues that affect both
staff and students.

For years, class sizes have increased, lecturers and tutors have had less time to
devote to students, and numbers of front-line service staff have been reduced.

The ban is part of a campaign of legal industrial action to try to improve
conditions on campus. Its primary purpose is to impact on university administration.

The results ban is supported by the National Tertiary Education Union, Melbourne
University Student Union, and the Graduate Student Association. Carla Drakeford,
President of the Student Union, has explained why the ban is necessary:

"Issues affecting University academics and staff are those which trickle down and
affect students. Teaching quality, over-crowded class rooms and tutor availability
outside of class times are all serious issues that can be fixed by a decision of the
University to increase staff wages and create a more positive working environment,
free from voluntary redundancies."

The results ban is a last resort, and it comes after a lengthy period of stalled
negotiations between staff representatives and senior management.

Please be assured that no student will suffer serious disadvantage or hardship as a
result of this legal industrial action. To ensure that students who need their
results before the ban is lifted (e.g. for reasons to do with employment,
visas/immigration, or other issues affecting student welfare), a joint staff and
student Exemptions Committee has been established. If you believe you could be
disadvantaged by a delay in receiving your results, please visit
http://universitybargaining.com.au/students/melbourne/

*** Any student who can demonstrate a genuine need to get their results on time will
be exempted from the ban. ***

There is more information about why this ban is necessary, and the form to apply for
an exemption, at the website.

We sincerely hope that the ban will be lifted very soon once negotiations
recommence, and we will keep you informed of any developments.
