Memory

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from two-time USA Memory Champion, Ron White.

What if you could play a game of cards with your buddies and recall every card that had been played? You can.

What if you could meet a client today and six months later see him at a football game and recall his name along with his wife’s and kids’ names? You can.

What if you could look at a 50 digit number for 90 seconds and then repeat the number forwards and backwards from memory? You can.

So how do you master your memory to this level? By utilizing a simple system of mental maps, you will be amazed at the amount of knowledge you will be able to store.

Here’s how to begin:

  1. Select 5 rooms in your home or office.
  2. In each room, number 5 large items. Number these items 1-25. The first item in the first room is #1, the first item in the second room is #6, the first item in the third room is #11, and so on. For example: Bedroom–1. desk, 2. bed, 3. tv, 4. dresser, 5. computer…Bathroom-6. toilet 7. window, 8. shower, 9. sink, 10. towel rack…etc. Remember, this is just an example. You want to select the pieces of furniture in the way they flow around your particular room.
  3. Practice saying these pieces of furniture and their corresponding numbers over and over until it becomes second nature to say them forwards or backwards. We will refer to these pieces of furniture as “files.”
  4. Now whenever you wish you to recall something, turn it into a picture and imagine it interacting with this piece of furniture.

Let’s say that you want to memorize all the Super Bowl winners. Once you have your files (the pieces of furniture) memorized, the next item of business is to turn whatever you wish to recall into a picture.

So you would be looking at a list that looks like this:

  1. Green Bay Packers
  2. Green Bay Packers
  3. New York Jets
  4. Kansas City Chiefs
  5. Baltimore Colts
  6. Dallas Cowboys
  7. Miami Dolphins
  8. Miami Dolphins
  9. Pittsburgh Steelers
  10. Pittsburgh Steelers

In order to remember anything, it must be an image that you can imagine. For example, if you wanted to recall the number 593787, it might be tough to recall. But a photo album with a coffee cup in it would be easy to remember. That is my picture for 593787. For now, lets address turning the football teams into pictures, a much simpler task that turning 593787 into an image.

What could you picture for the Green Bay Packers? Perhaps packaging. Coming up with an image for the Jets is easy–just picture an airplane jet. For the Chiefs, you would picture an Indian chief. The Colts would be a horse and the Cowboys a cowboy. This is pretty simple actually when you’re dealing with teams.

Now this is where it gets fun. Take each of these images and place them mentally around your 25 files in chronological order. For example, since the Packers won the first Super Bowl, imagine someone packaging a box on your number one file. To use the example above, you would picture someone packaging a box on top of your desk. The more action/emotion you can put into this image, the better chances you will recall it later. On your number two file, or your bed, you would also see packaging. On your number three file, you would imagine a jet landing or crashing into your tv. For your fourth file, you could imagine an Indian chief sitting on your dresser.

To memorize all the Super Bowl winners, you will need at least 45 files, but that is easy enough to mentally construct by simply selecting more rooms in your home (or other buildings and selecting 5 items in each). Because you are placing 5 files in each room, you should be able to memorize the numbers of your files rapidly.

The rationalization of 5 in a room, is that if you want to know what the 15th Superbowl winner was, it might take a minute to figure it out if you had 4 files in one room, 6 in another, and 9 in another. However, if there are 5 in a room, it is very easy. All you need to do is mentally jump to the 15th file in your home, or the last item in your third room, and you will see it getting raided by bandits, and this tells you the Oakland Raiders won Super Bowl 15.

Now whenever you wish to remember the whole list of teams, you simply mentally walk through your house, and imagine yourself looking at each piece of furniture–and its corresponding team–as you go from room to room.

This system can be used to memorize anything from 50 digit numbers, business presentations, chapters of books, college homework, product knowledge, or even sports team champions.

Happy memorizing!

but yeh anyway
got a funny application question from MARS graduate program:
My happiest memories of my time at uni involved: a? partying and rebelling against rules; b) working really hard and feeling proud of my achievements; c) workign hard sometimes but generally taking it easy.

lol honestly its a... since it was so fuckgin carefree. but yeh ok i wonder what they grade this by. like its too easy to just pick the "right" answer. they problably have some trick lol

lol so i was watching a PWC video for a particular business area private clients, where they have assurance advisory and others, and in advisory they described what advisory was. but for private clients, the people are just talking about their fuckgin work life balance. here i am tryign to fill in the questionaire which asks me why i want to be in that particular area. but dude they just talk about the generic graduate program... "i made so many friends" " the program was good" "before the program i was travelling""i have a relaxed week". SHIT IS USELESS.

sleep advice

http://www.wikihow.com/Fall-Asleep

Preparation
1.
Pay attention to what you're eating. Some foods are known to aid sleep – eat carbohydrates, bananas, peanuts, and figs, and have milk-based drinks. These contain tryptophans, a precursor for creating melatonin.[2] Some snacks to consider include: cookies and milk, sliced banana with chopped dates, and wholegrain bread with lettuce

lol i eat them all the time sighhh

2.
Don't exercise in the three hours leading up to bedtime. Exercise awakens you, with the impact lasting for up to three hours after you've completed the exercise, as well as decreasing the secretion of melatonin (needed to help you sleep).[8] Instead, exercise during the day or late afternoon. Exercise is ideal first thing in the morning, as it helps you to wake up and stay metabolized throughout the day.

thats ok, i exercise and then im tired

3.
Avoid taking naps during the daytime. Limit naps.[9] If you need a nap, nap no more than 15 minutes (a power nap). Anything longer can make it much harder to fall asleep in the evenings.

lately i dont' take naps

4.
Reduce your stress levels. Stress, anxiety, worry, and depression can all contribute to an inability to fall asleep. Seek help for stress management, including finding positive techniques to handle stress such as yoga, relaxation, cognitive behavioral therapy, self-hypnosis, assertiveness training, meditation, exercise, visualization, etc.[10] Psychotherapy can be helpful if you have underlying anxiety, trauma, or depression issues.[11]

maybe. maybe. lol with worth and shit, anxiety rather than stress lol. depression? nahhhh

5.
Have a warm bath before bedtime. This can help to relax you, helping you to unwind.[12]

whatevers

6.
Establish a bedtime routine. Try to develop a pattern of doing the same things prior to bed each night, for example, having a warm drink, a bath, a short read, etc.[13

the computer.

7
Keep to an established sleeping routine. Train your mind to accept a set bedtime every night, and the same waking up time every day (with a little leeway for seasonal changes).[14] [15]Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time, even on weekends. If the problem still persists, just keep repeating until you create a new habit.

yeh fail at this one lol

8
Wear comfortable clothing. Clothes for sleeping are best when loose, comfortable and not restrictive. Avoid wearing anything too hot, or that leaves you feeling chilly. Shorts or light pajamas are often the most comfortable. Sleeping in the nude works well for many people, provided you feel comfortable and warm.

generally i sleep in comfortable stuff, even if not comfortable i still fall aslsep lol

9
Choose a comfortable position. Position yourself comfortably in bed. Always choose the position that works best for you, whether you're a side, back, or stomach sleeper. Trying to force yourself to sleep in a position that feels unnatural will prevent you from falling asleep. If you're uncomfortable, correct your position immediately, for example, your body's weight on your arm is too strong, or your hip feels awkward – change position until you're comfortable. Especially make sure your pillow is neither too flat nor too high because this may put strain on your neck.

sleep on my side

10
Use aromatherapy and scent solutions. There are a number of aromatherapy suggestions that might help you to fall asleep. For example, lemon balm oil, chamomile oil, lavender oil, and marjoram can be used singly or in combination for the bath, a massage, or as an air or pillow spray.[16]

nah cbf lol

then it talks about preparing sleep space LOl - i don't think my sleep space can be changed

and next are the things to do when your actually IN the bed
1.
Read. Reading is a fantastic first approach. Reading can help by focusing your mind on only one thing, instead of racing through the day's activities. Read something calming or perhaps dull; for example, if you're studying, the textbook is fairly guaranteed to send you nodding off!
2.
Try music or audio. There are a number of musical or audio techniques that can help you to fall asleep, depending on how much you enjoy sound as you're falling asleep.
" Sing to yourself. Sing a song in your mind to help remove challenging thoughts. A lullaby might be a soothing choice." lololoololol
3.
Relax to shift your attention away from the concerns keeping you awake. Some techniques include:
muscle loosening - (erase technique loll) , acknowledging (using 5 senses not your mind), stretching, meditating
4.
Use breathing techniques. Deep breathing can help you relax enough to fall asleep. Lie on your back in bed, watching or feeling your stomach rise, and then breathe. Your goal is to breath in and out about six times per minute, as per this exercise:
5.
Use your imagination. The time between laying your head on the pillow and falling asleep can be a time to plan a lucid dream, or just to let your mind wander and be as imaginative as you like. Lost in the world of imagination, you may just be lucky enough not to notice you've drifted off into dreamland. Here are some ideas:
EXACTLY WHAT DOESNT" MAKE ME FALL ASLEEP.
6.
Play a game. Sometimes a game can distract you enough to get you to the land of nod. Either real games or mind games can work; if you're playing a real game, keep the game material at your bedside and a book light to keep the light level low. counting sheep come here.
counting sheep don't work for me lol
7
Try self-hypnosis
lol out of my league.
8
Get out of bed and distract yourself temporarily. If things are so bad that you're tossing, turning, and kicking your partner, it might be best to get out of bed and do something for a while to wear yourself out properly. Some ideas of what to do once you've got out of bed include: doing dull things, movie, sitting, yoga?,

lol and thats the advice wiki how gives me lol intersting. i dunno we'll see i wanna try the erasing technique lol sounds fun, erasing each part of your body from legs up

harddirve problem solved?

well last night i went and defragmented my computer right, and then amazingly this morning, i check my hdd and theres 30gb free! (as opposed to 14), and this totally adds up. which is awesome lol. so i THink its because i defragmented, i shall believe in defragmentation now on lol. and so the treesize program is correct, so that means all files are actually calculated onto that, but now theres just this strange discrepancy, i.e. treesize says i take up MORE space that i do via normal rightclick properties on C: lol oh well.

so now i can clean my desk/room and then fix up everything while applying for jobs.

last night was a very bad sleep night, couldn't sleep till like 5-6 ish, was very bad so i ended up playing some quadropop on my phone. but failed hard lol.
lol ok so after 2 seconds of reading wiki about sleeping pills, they dont' relaly provide a good quality sleep, they just put you to sleep, and cause like daytime fatigue and stuff lol
and its only prescribed to children if they suffer somnambulism (sleep walking) which is luls. and is rarely prescribed to elderly due to its effect on like road accidents lol. so now i have to devise aplan to give me sleep. exercise? lol
although last night i had some pretty cool dreams.

the harddrive problem

http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

so this little freeware will help you find out exactly whats ttaking up all that space in your harddrive lol.
i guess it kinda did help me solve my problme, although there is still like a 14gb discrepancy between the size of available space and what it says in this freeware. so im not sure what it attributes to, but save for the hibernation (2gb), and temp files (~2gb) its probalbly got to do with the widows vista and other bits of operating system related, or program related files ... lol no idea.

oh it also helped me to discretely calculate how much porn i've accumulated as it is spread in in numerous folders lol
